no i don’t actually sit in zazen and in fact at my age from a cardiovascular point of view i don’t think  “ zazen ”  is safe at all, but sit in a chair or walk around a bit or go outside and sit out under the stars since it is still warm enough to do that .  . its very rural here and quiet . .

i have never had anything like what you describe but have seen reports of it, i can only guess at some developmental neural wiring interaction or possible cardiovascular problem, we are not really designed to sit still like in zazen and actually korean zen is much more into standing and walking meditations . .

meditation definitely inducts neural plasticity and its not always positive

when i first started zen which was going to a weekly zazen session, it was traumatic, more so than it seems so its actually quite a big deal what you are doing

to be honest most people get screwed by meditation because they read and think trash, what made it useful to me was a strong background in quality literature and reading poetry, with that the default circuitry of the brain has both the process and content to run doing something useful and not just engraving default patterns destructively deeper

Today I witnessed something horrific.

There is a dairy farm near where I live, only a small herd of milking cows. I've become very familiar with the girls, as I drive by almost every day. I know their markings, who leads the herd, which girls prefer to be amongst the group and which prefer to be on the outer. I've even named one of them, Madam Blacklegs, and she is a stunning girl. Some weeks ago all they all disappeared, and I feared the worst, that they had been trucked off to the abattoir. But what actually happened was far worse than any slaughterhouse.

A few weeks after I noticed them missing, some young calves appeared in the paddock situated across the road from the herd's usual paddock. They are always closely huddled together, clustered along the fenceline or under bushes. But still no sign of the milking herd.

Until today.

They'd been moved off to a back paddock, as it turned out to have their calves, the same calves who were situated across the road. I saw the farmer drawing the herd into different paddock with a ute full of feed. But one girl was down at the fenceline.

And she was screaming.

Running along the fence she'd veer towards the road only to be repelled by the barbed wire. She could see, hear and smell the calves but could not get to them. Her eyes were wide and white, foam coming from her nose and mouth as she sought a way across the road. The calves were also agitated, pressing at the fence, pushing their head through the wire and lowing.

The sounds coming from this mother were heart wrenching. Bellowing and crying, shouting and screaming. I've never heard such desperation or grief.

She is a mother denied the very ability to mother her young.

Why?

So you can drink her milk, eat cheese and yoghurt. And eventually, so you can eat her calf or feed her spent body to your dog.

Over half a million calves are sent to slaughter under the age of one month by the dairy industry. They are removed from their mothers 12-24 hours after birth. Legally they can be loaded onto trucks and sent to the slaughterhouses at 5 days old. It is legal to kill a calf under thirty days old with a hammer to the head. Their mothers live in a constant cycle of birth, theft of their calf, milking and impregnation until their worn out bodies are no longer productive enough to be profitable.

I cannot believe that as a society we accept this level of abuse towards animals, and that we justify it by reasons of taste and tradition. And that we cling to the notion of the small local farmer as being a beacon of ethical behaviour.

well my gooseberry plants are massively ripening at the moment so i am having a lot of those lightly cooked, also with shredded coconut as it is a good anti-biofilmic

i find the gooseberries phenolic so two  no-fenols  and a zyme prime in a bit of water after the meal seems to work

also i am becoming more cautious of the reversion problem with the starch in cooked carbohydrates like rice   “ reverting ” ,  ie  once stored in the fridge, the starch becomes less digestible again and really needs to be cooked with water again to improve the digestibility !

shredded coconut has been surprisingly successful and really i don’t do well on rice or potatoes and should perhaps look at almond flour as elaine gottschall suggests

my own experience is that enlightenment and true dia kensho are complete but has very rough edges that may be dulled only for new ones to appear and actually for deeper mistakes to occur !

ewk, you always go on other people opinions, with dogen you need to go right back to the text or word for word translations !

you are going on the dogen that suits you in terms of certain essayists opinions

most people on r|zen are clueless about the imperfect and distorted nature of translations, with google translate you can do them for yourself and gaining experience in translations gives that   “ experiential feel ”  for its imperfection !

years ago i started with st. teresa of avila’s famous  ‘ bookmark ’  poem and i could never convey it adequately and years later after more translation experience i realised the process itself is flawed, you can’t translate quality writing adequately !

that’s why a good tv or video adaptation of say  “ war and peace ”  is better than reading any translation because it can convey so much more effortlessly !
